One of the places to visit is the Gangotri Temple, which was built on the right bank of the Bhagirathi River by the Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in the eighteenth century. This natural rock, known as a shivling, is now submerged in a river. Myth has it that Lord Shiva perched on a Shivling while holding the Ganges in his matted hair. Whenever the water level drops in the winter, it may be seen. The confluence of the Kedar and Ganga rivers is called the Kedar Ganga Sangam and is located around 100 meters from of the Ganga Temple. This river flows from the Kedar Valley and joins the Bhagirathi on the left bank.

"Hidden Benares" is the literal translation of the name GuptKashi. According to legend, whenever the Pandava brothers went looking for Shiva, he hid in GuptKashi at first, but then fled to Kedarnath, farther up the valley, to avoid being found. Some of the Kedarnath pandas (inherited pilgrimage priests) spend the winter in GuptKashi, and the picture of Kedarnath travels through the city on its route to Ukhimath (from across the valley) for the season.

The Kedarnath range provides a stunning background for the Kedarnath shrine, which was one of Lord Shiva's 12 Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva, the destroyer and the guardian, also goes by the name Kedar. After defeating the Kaurava in the battle of Kurukshetra, the mythology goes, the Pandavas felt sorry over the deaths of their own siblings and asked Lord Shiva's forgiveness. He managed to avoid them on many occasions, eventually hiding out in the guise of a bull in Kedarnath while on the run. Seeing that he was being pursued, he dove below, leaving just his hump above ground. Lord Shiva manifested in whole or in part at four additional locations, all of which are sacred to his devotees. Tungnath revealed his arms, Rudranath his face, Madhmaheshwar his abdomen, and Kalpeshwar his locks (hair) and head. These five holy sites—Kedarnath plus the four we just mentioned—are together known as Panch Kedar. Set Up By Your Own Campus Government.
